Babergh District Council have issued a notice confirming the HMS Ganges planning application has been granted full permission.
Despite members of the development committee granting permission back in March 2015, a lengthy legal process involving all parties with an interest in the application included in the S106 agreement, has been underway. Everyone has now signed the agreement and so the developers can now start work on the HMS Ganges site.
There is a possibility a judicial review will be called for. There is a six week period from today in which any legal challenge can be started.
The HMS Ganges site has permission for 285 houses, a hostel, a care home and retails units, to be built on the derelict brownfield site. The world famous mast will be kept in one form or another, while developers have promised around £1million towards things such as a better bus service, a cycle route and other community based initiatives.
Ganges closed as a Royal Navy Training Establishment in 1976 after opening as a shore base in 1905. A museum dedicated to all the boys that passed through the infamous gates is now housed at Shotley Marina.
