Set in the heart of the Shotley Peninsula, the Alton Water reservoir is playing host for the 7th consecutive year to the popular Alton Water Run.
The scenic reservoir run is to take place on Sunday 11th May 2014. The UKA affiliated race boasts 3 separate challenges; a 10k run around its perimeter, a 5k route for anyone 11 and over plus a 2k fun run which attracts children with their parents and even their grandparents!
The run, a registered charity (1147145) is managed each year by members of the PTA and staff of the four schools which surround the reservoir; Holbrook Academy and the 3 feeder Primary Schools, Stutton, Tattingstone and Holbrook.
Dr Simon Letman, Principal of Holbrook Academy said, “This run has developed into a very credible running event which attracts in excess of 1,000 competitors. It is held in high regard by the local community and Holbrook Academy is so proud of its success”.
New for 2014 is chip timing for the 5k and 10k races. Timing races this way has now become the norm and although eating into the essential proceeds that the run provides the schools, it is a necessity that ensures the run continues to grow and develop.
There are plenty of activities for non-runners too with a variety of stalls, a bouncy castle and locally sourced refreshments providing a delicious BBQ feast. Additionally, Thomas Wolsey, a school for children with moderate to severe physical and associated learning difficulties will be offering visitors the chance to empathise with their students in an exciting unique challenge.
Julia Holdcroft, Run Director for the last 4 years added, this event needs in excess of 60 volunteer helpers, such as marshalling at various points on the run, facilitating the car parking and ensuring all runners go through a quick and efficient registration process when they arrive. We are in need of more helpers; anyone that is interested and available to help should visit the website to please let me know”.
Contributing to the success of the Alton Water Run businesses based locally such as; JM Finn & Co, Ransomes Jacobsen, Raring2Go!,Gotelee Solicitors, Ipswich Audi, NFU Mutual, Dedham Osteopathy, Survey Solutions and the Sweatshop have sponsored the event, providing much needed funding and support essential for the continuation this local event.
