A group of Shotley scouts came prepared for hard graft as they cleared a huge area of space in order to plant 20 fruit trees.
Under the watchful eye of leaders Steve and Jane Leach and Heritage Wood coordinator Gary Richens, the pack worked enthusiastically and tirelessly to get the job done.
Their efforts will bear fruit over the coming months and years as the trees, kindly supplied by the Suffolk Coast and Heaths’ AONB team, will be planted with their help, and that of the Shotley Beavers and Cubs.
Gary Richens said: “The scouts did and excellent job, we are very grateful for their help and Jane and Steve for organizing them to come down.
“It’s another example of what a great community we have here in Shotley.”
The Community Orchard, which is situated just above the Quaterdeck in Heritage Park, is the first time additional trees have been planted since the parish council took over the woodland in 2013.
Part of the scrub cleared will be left to provide additional habitat for insects to thrive among the lichen, moss and fungi.
While the scouts involved will receive extra hours towards their Community Badge, the cubs and beavers have earned their Gardening Badge.
