The former HMS Ganges site has been empty since the police force left, The site has been purchased by Haylink who are planning to redevelope.
Current Status AMBER
New plans (Application Number B/12/00500) have been submitted to Babergh district council on the 31 May 2012 and we are waiting for the decision by babergh.
The Summary of the plans are : The full and partial demolition of buildings associated with the redevelopment of the site to provide: 285 dwellings; a 60 bed nursing home; 400 sq. m convenience retail; a building containing 400 sq.m flexible dentist/doctor's surgery/veterinary surgery/retail offices (B1/A2 or D1 uses); and 600 sq. m of offices (B1 use); the use of Nelson Hall for estate offices, changing rooms, dry sports, workshops (use class B1B/C), community use & cafe; the use of Vincent House as a hotel (C2 use) together with parking and landscaping to form a linear park and landscaped gardens together with associated further landscaping and lighting.
Shotley Parish Response.
The parish coucil have reviewed the plans and made a formal response which is available to read here.
In summary the parish broadly supports the mixed use plan and are pleased to see that many of the buildings of historic value have been retained and that the proposed design, materials and layout are sympathetic to their surroundings. However there are a number of reservations across the board.

Summary History of Shotley Major Planning Applications
Former H.M.S. Ganges Site
1 In July 2006 the Secretary of State refused planning permission for 325 houses following a Public Inquiry which found the application had serious shortcomings and was not sustainable.
2 Babergh District Council (BDC) has granted a Certificate of Lawful Use for the site confirming it is a residential training centre. The site can be reopened for this purpose without having to make a planning application. BDC have confirmed that this does not allow the site to be used as a prison or asylum centre.
3 BDC has granted planning permission for a “spine road” across the site, linking the marina to the B1456, this has not yet commenced and Babergh has extended the permission for a further 3 years.
4 In 1988 BDC granted Outline Planning Permission for a “retirement community” of 404 dwellings. In 2007 the developers submitted proposals to implement this decision; the “Reserved Matters” application. This application was accompanied by an “Environmental Statement” describing the impacts on the physical, economic and social environment and proposing measures to mitigate or compensate for any harm. BDC commissioned an independent assessment of the statement which found that it was “poor and inadequate.” The ES was substantially re-written and an “appropriate assessment” by BDC (July 2009) found it to be “adequate.” The RM application raised complex legal questions with BDC, the Shotley peninsula parishes and the developer all seeking QC opinions. In January 2010 BDC refused the application on design grounds and inadequate mitigation. The developer appealed this decision. The Inspector upheld the refusal and the developer has applied to the High Court to have this decision quashed.
5 The developers in June 2012 submitted a new application for a housing development with community and employment uses that they believe will meet the shortcomings identified in respect of the 325 and 404 applications. This application is accompanied by an Environmental Statement. The assessment of this application is likely to take 4-6 months.
Shotley Marina and Land Owned by the Marina
6 Following the improvements to King Edward VII Drive the Marina can start the construction of up to 70 homes at the edge of the Marina basin. Following the completion of the “spine road” they may start building up to a further 80 homes.
7 The Marina has permission for 12 dwellings and 4 business units at the boatyard site (opposite the Sailing Club King Edward VII Drive) and for the demolition of Shotley Lodge (adjacent to the Sailing Club) and its replacement with 8 flats.
